Armenians in Japan

Unlike other countries, Japan is the country where the Armenian Diaspora has not historically been formed. Armenians came to Japan in the second half of the 19th century. Here, there were “Aghabek and Company” commercial institutions.
The institutions acted under the direct leadership of Anahit Abeghyan and her son. In 1920 Anahit Aghabekyan-Abgaryan was appointed as a consul of Armenia in Japan.  In her articles, she regularly mentioned about Armenian case and published them in Japanese English-language press, moreover, she always tried to help Armenian refugees. Currently, there are 100 Armenians in Japan, mainly in Tokyo. Besides, there is also an Armenian study center, where “Ararat” newspaper is annually published 7-8 times for Japanese who are interested in Armenians and Armenia. There is also the Embassy of the RA in Tokyo.
