Karine Karamyan (1953-2019)

Today I want to tell you about the first Japanese language teacher in RA Karina Karamyan sensei.

Karine Karamyan was born in 1953, in Yerevan, she studied at the chemical department of the Polytechnic Institute and worked for many years as a chemical engineer.Being interested in Japanese culture, she started studing Japanese on her own since the 1970s.

n 1992, when the first Japanese language department in Armenia was opened at the Yerevan Humanitarian Institute, Karamyan began teaching Japanese there.During the years of work at the Yerevan Humanitarian Institute (1992-2005), she wrote a number of textbooks, and also published the “Armenian-Japanese Dictionary”.

Since 2010 she has toutht at the Armenian-Russian University, has made a great contribution to the establishment of a Japanese language and culture center, as well as to the development of Japanese studies.

Karamyan was also engaged in translation activities and translated into Armenian Hiroyoshi Segawa’s scientific work “The Forgotten Armenian Genocide” (2005), as well as Banana Yoshimoto’s “cuisine” (published after the translator’s death in 2020).

For her contribution to the Armenian-Japanese relations in 2017 Karamyan received the praise by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Karine Karamyan died in 2019 after a long illness.
