Under the presidency of His Holiness Garegin II Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians there has been approved a new order of blessing. According to it, every year, on New Year’s Eve, at 00:30 o’clock in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and in all the churches of the Armenian Church at the end of the Prayer of Thanks there will be offered the service of pomegranate blessing.

It is reported from the Information Center of Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

In the Armenian tradition, as a national symbol pomegranate has the meaning of life, blossom and abundance. In the Christian symbolism pomegranate symbolizes the image of the blood shed by Jesus Christ and it also symbolizes the Glorious Resurrection of the Lord and the variety of the God’s graces. In the interpretations of the teachers and fathers of the Armenian church, pomegranate is also presented with the symbolism that like the beans of a pomegranate there are many and different members of the church, however like a pomegranate they are all covered with a solid peel being united in one Church.

This is the reason why the symbolism of a pomegranate has been widely used in the Armenian Church architecture, arts and miniature.
