Convention on Biological Diversit
On July 14-15, the Special Envoy of the #CoP17 Presidency of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Ambassador Mher Margaryan and the Ambassador of Armenia to Japan, Monika Simonyan participated in the Global Nature Positive Summit in Kumamoto, Japan.
At the opening of the Summit, the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Armenia, Hambardzum Matevosyan, delivered a video message, presenting the priorities of the presidency of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity to be held in Yerevan, emphasizing the importance of the inclusive nature of the Conference and the active involvement of the private sector, financial institutions, scientific circles, civil society, as well as indigenous peoples and local communities.
Ambassador Margaryan participated in a panel discussion on the involvement of local and urban authorities, as well as delivered a speech at the final session, presenting the preparations for COP 17, the significance of the first global review and the inclusive agenda of the Conference.
During the Summit, the Armenian delegation met with Mr. Doi Kentaro, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, Ministry of the Environment of Japan, Dr. Grethel Aguilar, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Mr. Kimura Takashi, Governor of Kumamoto Prefecture, as well as held talks and discussions with representatives of the private sector, academia and non-governmental organizations, attending the Summit, on potential cooperation and engagement of relevant stakeholder within the framework of the COP 17 Conference to be held in Yerevan.
The Nature Positive Initiative is a diverse coalition of 27 global nature conservation organizations, academia, sustainability business platforms and standards agencies focused on supporting the delivery of the Global Biodiversity Framework mission of ‘halt and reverse biodiversity loss’, the new global Nature Positive goal.
