The film “The Amerikatsi,” which tells the story of an Amerikatsi imprisoned for a crime not committed in Armenia under Soviet rule in 1948, will be released in Japan under the title “Amerikatsi Stork and the Happy Dining Table.” Distributed by Aya Productions, the film will be released throughout the country from June 13th at Toho Cinemas Chanter in Tokyo and other locations.
The main character is Charlie Bakhchinyan, who left for America as a child to escape the persecution of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey). He eventually returned to his homeland to learn about his roots, but was unjustly arrested and imprisoned in his homeland under Soviet rule.
In the midst of his grief, he discovers that he can see into a room in a nearby apartment from a small window in his cell, and it becomes a daily routine for him to observe the couple living there. Before long, Charlie had adapted to the couple’s lifestyle, eating meals with them, singing songs with them, and enjoying conversation with them.
However, the relationship between the couple became strained, and the husband was left alone in the room. Meanwhile, Charlie’s departure to Siberia is being decided, and as the deadline for the transfer approaches, he carries out an operation to reconcile the spouses.
The film is directed, written and stars Armenian-American Michael Goorjian, whose grandfather survived the genocide. The film is an Armenian-American co-production, which won 19 awards at film festivals around the world and was the first Armenian film to be shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
